Umbrella-making demonstration @ Hataorimachi Festival
At the Hataorimachi Festival on October 6th and 7th,
We will also be demonstrating the two steps of umbrella making!
We will be demonstrating the triangular fabric used in the sacoche workshop, the cutting process that forms the base of the fabric, and the saddle stitching process that attaches the sewn triangular fabric to the frame.
This is a process that you don't usually get to see, so I hope you'll come and see it!
Below is an excerpt from the Hata Festival website:

Makita Shoten is the only shop in Japan that can manufacture umbrellas from start to finish. At the venue, an umbrella craftsman will demonstrate the cutting and saddle stitching processes.
"Cutting" is the process of cutting the woven fabric into the triangles of the umbrella. Don't underestimate it as it's just cutting, as it is a skilled job that involves cutting the exquisitely curved triangles of the umbrella with precision and speed, and it is truly impressive. "Saddle stitching" is a process that brings the fabric and frame together to make an umbrella. Seeing how every single detail is done by hand gives you a glimpse of how carefully each umbrella is made at Makita Shoten.
Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes, and is limited to two sessions per day. Don't miss this rare opportunity!
